WHERE’S THAT?

Nevis and Saint Croix

Nevis is a small Caribbean island in the West Indies. Nevis and Saint Kitts together form one country called the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Saint Croix is one of the US Virgin Islands, also in the Caribbean.

II. A Rough Start

A young Alexander Hamilton was raised mostly on Saint Croix by his mother, Rachel Faucette, since he was abandoned by his father, James Hamilton. His childhood was marked by one tragedy after another. He and his older brother were left poor and parentless after their father disappeared, and their mother died in 1768. Shortly after that, their cousin, who was also their guardian, died by suicide. Just about everyone else in their family was dead by the time the brothers were fourteen and sixteen.

Hamilton needed cash and went to work for a mercantile house—an import/export business—called Beekman and Cruger. It was a good, respectable job. And lucky for him, he was taken in by a successful merchant, Thomas Stevens, and his wife.

Then tragedy struck again. This time it was Mother Nature. In 1772, a hurricane devastated Saint Croix, prompting Hamilton to write a letter.

Where now, oh! vile worm, is all thy boasted fortitude and resolution? What is become of thine arrogance and self sufficiency? Why dost thou tremble and stand aghast? How humble, how helpless, how contemptible you now appear. And for why? The jarring of elements—the discord of clouds? Oh! impotent presumptuous fool! how durst thou offend that Omnipotence, whose nod alone were sufficient to quell the destruction that hovers over thee, or crush thee into atoms? See thy wretched helpless state, and learn to know thyself. Learn to know thy best support. Despise thyself, and adore thy God.
